Akatsuki (Aki) Kimura

Professor
Biography:Akatsuki Kimura was born in Moscow in 1974 and raised in Sapporo, Hokkaido. He graduated from Sapporo Minami High School and received his B.Sc. from the University of Tokyo in 1997 under the supervision of Prof. Masayuki Yamamoto. He earned his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of Tokyo, where he worked under the supervision of Prof. Masami Horikoshi. After completing postdoctoral research in Prof. Shuichi Onami’s laboratory at Keio University, he established the Cell Architecture Laboratory at the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) in 2006. He aims to establish and advance Cell Architecture — a new field that seeks to understand the cell as an architectural entity.

Takayuki Torisawa

Assistant Professor
Biography:Takayuki Torisawa was born in Tokyo in 1984. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Yoko Toyoshima. After working as a researcher at the Advanced ICT Research Institute, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), he joined the Cell Architecture Laboratory in 2018 as an Assistant Professor. His research focuses on understanding how order emerges in collectives — from proteins to microorganisms — across different scales of organization.

Technical Section Staff
I support research using micro–computed tomography (micro-CT). My passion is to visualize and share the internal structures of living organisms through clear, engaging 3D images.

Saya Ichihara

Post-doctoral Researcher
I joined the Cell Architecture Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher in October 2022 after completing my Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Takashi Sado. I’m fascinated by how things are arranged and structured — both in cells and in the world around us.
When I’m not in the lab, I enjoy relaxing with a drink and dreaming about getting a dog someday. And yes, I speak fluent Kansai dialect! 🐶🍶

Tokitaka Katayama

Graduate Student, Genetics Program, SOKENDAI / SOKENDAI Special Researcher
I am fascinated by beautiful shapes. I am currently exploring how coordinated cell deformation creates living forms by examining gastrulation, which occurs in the early stages of organism development. In my daily life, I love wearing mode-style clothes with beautiful silhouettes as I pay particular attention to the shape.

Tomoko Ozawa

Laboratory Technician
I’m from Shizuoka City — the same prefecture where the National Institute of Genetics is located. I joined the Cell Architecture Laboratory in 2016 and have been happy to support its research ever since. I’m a naturally positive person and always try to bring that spirit into the lab.
