Tomo Kondo revealed that when an embryo contains three centrosomes instead of the usual two, the decision of whether the cell divides into two or three parts occurs probabilistically. By combining experimental data with a mechanical model, the study elucidated how the distribution of forces determines the number and orientation of cleavage furrows.
